Greetings everyone. I decided to make a journal, starting with Alpha and make a reanimator deck, looking at one set at a time, all the way up to RtR. http://www.freewebs.com/boyachi/Reanimadventure.html

I've gotten all the way up to Legends so far and thought I'd share it to get your input.

Link was rescuing Zelda. Now link is back and working properly.

I got up to Ice Age. I would still appreciate input.

I think you should include some matches you played with each build...just to spice up the content a bit...other than that...I'm digging these articles so far...keep up the good work man...

I think the matches thing is a good idea, but the question is: what deck do I play it against?
I could:
Play against my own decks
Play against just my current Reanimator (which I think would be too short to be conclusive)
Play against decks used during that time period
Play against decks used today (common era)
Play against the last rendition of the deck
Something else?

Which do you think would be the best idea?

Perhaps some of the more commonplace decks of that particular set/block?

I thought you may want to know.  You mentioned Bartel Runeaxe in Legends didn't make the cut because he says "Bartel Runeaxe cannot be the target of Aura spells" (as is the oracle wording).  The wording of the card means it will only function while the card is on the battlefield.  While Bartel is in the Graveyard he is a legal target for Animate Dead.  You can think of cards with similar wording if you break down the real wording for shroud, "~ cannot be the target of spell or abilities".  When the Animate dead resolves it enters the battlefield enchanting the creature card in the graveyard, returns that creature to the battlefield and attaches itself to it.  Because the later parts of the ability on Animate Dead don't mention target and the Animate Dead is no longer a spell it can hit both Shroud'd Creatures and Bartel.

Just in case you're curious, the wording for Animate Dead had to be changed a Lot to work in the current wording, look at the current oracle wording for the card, think of how it works, follow its steps, and you'll see why it works:

Enchant creature card in a graveyard

When Animate Dead enters the battlefield, if it's on the battlefield, it loses "enchant creature card in a graveyard" and gains "enchant creature put onto the battlefield with Animate Dead." Return enchanted creature card to the battlefield under your control and attach Animate Dead to it. When Animate Dead leaves the battlefield, that creature's controller sacrifices it.

Enchanted creature gets -1/-0.

The conversion is the whole reason I was iffy with it. The last ruling I got was 1995 saying that it couldn't be done. I assume that yours is much more recent.

I finally registered Magic Workstation, allowing me to bring my reanimator decks to life AND spar them against decks with cards comprised entirely from the page's set. I just finished playtesting Alpha's and posted the result.

It took me a while, DyingJester, but I took your idea to heart!

My only complaint is that cards at bottoms of pages have their P/T cut off or sometimes part of the text. I really like this but I was under the impression that you were showing reanimator decks for each iteration of Standard. I'm only at homelands so maybe ALL of those sets were in the same Standard?

I will be addressing each set one at a time. I plan to skip over the UN-sets, as well as the editions that have no new cards. I am planning on including Commander and Planechase 2012 (when I get to them), but nothing as rare as the mail-in cards, holiday promos, or rarer.

The idea was that whatever Reanimator deck I have now, will most likely fall to one that has had a different iteration from Alpha all the way through to Gatecrash (or Dragon Maze, as the case will likely be by the time I get anywhere close to "done").

I won't be doing Standard due to it (honestly) being too easy. Run Unburial Rites (and zombify?) and whatever other reanimatior cards there are and grab Avacyn, Griselbrand, and Gisela. Run whatever passes for Putrid Imp these days as a discard outet (or just make yourself discard through various ways) and reanimate to please. I know I'm leaving out a lot, but with Stormtide and that 7/7 Ali from Cairo Wurm from M13, I don't see the difficulty.

Black White would be good, but I DID just find Back from the Brink + Growing Ranks (or anything else with populate).

Discard: Civilized Scholar, Grimore of the Dead, Liliana of the Veil, Mind Rot, Murder of Crows (sort of), Pack Rat, Trading Post.

I have FINALLY managed to beat a pauper's version MTGSalvation's Battle of the Sets Antiquities deck. I will modifiy my site and the decklist and outcome in...twelve hours.

THEN I GET TO MAKE A LEGENDS DECK! It will be so much fun!
Fallen Empires will actually be fantastic for the Reanimator.

This project isn't dead, I'm just really busy (and I was struggling to make the deck actually win).

So I figured I'd let you all know that I'm all the way up to Judgment set (coming this week) since I got very busy on this site late December and early January. Torment was a challenge and so I'm doing a huge revamp since the deck has gained too much weight.

I would also like to get your input as far as reanimation targets: Is it better to run a Thorn Elemental or a Tidal Kraken?
Thorn Elemental is a 7/7 green elemental that if blocked can deal its combat damage all to the player instead of blocking creatures.
Tidal Kraken is a 6/6 Kraken that is unblockable.
Thorn is going to deal one more damage and have one more defense, but it has a much greater chance of dying if blocked, something that won't be an issue with Tidal Kraken. The other thing is that 3*7 is 21 (fatal) while 3*6 is 18 (nonfatal). Which do you think I should use?

I would go with something you can actually cast, just in case the reanimation stuff fails or gets used up.

@Dying Jester: I actually hadn't thought of that option...
@Terakhan: It is one of the reasons I've considered reintroducing Pit Spawn. Most of the big black creatures have some drawback (Lord of the Pit, Minion of the Wastes). To be honest, I've never had much of an issue with losing ways to reanimate while still having reanimator targets. Tempest and Torment rid me of both targets in the grave and animation methods. Tis why I run Quicksilver Amulet.

So as you might have heard, this year has been quite breathtaking for me. With Khans being released, I figured I'd restart my efforts and get another expansion or two done in October for Reanimadventure. Cue freewebs: some time in...April? They decided to no longer accept .html files. Now, apparently I can magically access some from google, but I can't get to any of the literal files to relocate them to another site and obviously, I can't create new ones, since they will not let me upload it. They've seriously locked me out of accessing my 100+ webpages. I fear that this project may be on a permanent hiatus. I'll keep you posted here, since OBVIOUSLY I CAN'T UPDATE MY WEBSITE! *-_-"
