Sadly you can't get them to 0 with this. When the Tree hits 0 toughness it gets put into your graveyard before you can activate any abilities.
And if you try to get around this using an instant to reduce its toughness when the swap ability is already on the stack, that won't work either because when the ability resolves, the tree won't be on the board so the exchange fails.

Yes, you are wright; my fault.
Grim Guardian or Exsanguinate or similar will fix this.
